Athlete of the Week.

It’s time to vote for The News-Press high school athlete of the week. Voting will close at noon on Thursday.

Nominees are derived from scores and stats called and emailed in by Lee County’s coaches during the week. Voting begins each Monday at 2 p.m.

Coaches can email scores to sports@news-press.com or call in scores at 239-335-0357. The deadline for each night’s results is 10 p.m.

On Thursday, The News-Press will unveil the Athlete of the Week on Snapchat and online. You can follow us on Snapchat at NPSports.

Here are this week’s nominees based on their performances between Sept. 12-17.

Football offense

Chris Curry, Lehigh, junior

Ran for 294 yards on 19 carries, including a 98 yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and a 91 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. His efforts led the Lightning to their first victory of the season again Barron Collier 26-14.

Curry’s big plays lead Lehigh to win

Football special teams

Daniel Diaz, South Fort Myers

Some would say sending a sophomore placekicker with no game experience out for a 36-yard game winning field goal against a bitter rival is a surefire date with failure. South Fort Myers would disagree. Diaz came up the hero in the Wolfpack’s 18-16 win over Fort Myers on Friday by nailing the first field goal of his career. Talk about pressure.

Boys swimming

Jace Chouinard, Riverdale, freshman

The Raiders athlete won the 200-meter freestyle in 2:05.31 on Tuesday in a tri-meet against Evangelical Christian School and Dunbar, helping Riverdale to two wins.

Girls swimming

Madi Baron, Fort Myers, sophomore

Helped the Green Wave to a tri-match victory over Mariner and Ida Baker on Tuesday winning two individual events. She took the 200-meter medley relay in 2:13.03 and the 500 free in 5:20.88.

Boys bowling

Wyatt Smith, Island Coast, junior

Bowled the first 300 game in Lee County high school history in a match victory over East Lee County on Thursday. It is the fourth time he has achieved the feat in his career.

Girls bowling

Kaela Ruby, Cape Coral, junior

Ruby, a LCAC champion as a freshman, bowled a 236 game against Riverdale leading the Seahawks to a 3-2 match victory on Tuesday.

Boys golf

Shane Reynolds, Evangelical Christian School, senior

The Sentinels golfer hit a 1-under 35 on Monday at Stoneybrook Golf Club, finishing with the best overall round of the day during his team’s quad-match against Bishop Verot, Barron Collier and Estero.

Girls golf

Anna Chazal, Fort Myers, junior

Helped the Green Wave score two match victories, shooting a 2-over 38 against Bishop Verot at Stoneybrook Golf Club on Wednesday and a 4-over 40 against Cape Coral at Palmetto Pines Country Club on Thursday.

Volleyball

Kylee Whiteleather, Riverdale

Posted 43 kills over three matches in helping Riverdale to a 2-1 record for the week with wins over Cape Coral and Ida Baker.

Boys cross country

Evan Williams, Estero, senior

The Wildcats runner, a transfer from SFCA, finished fourth overall at the Mariner Invitational in 17:31, helping Estero claim a second-place team finish.

Girls cross country

Chelsey Oliver, Riverdale, junior

Oliver had quite the outing at the Mariner Invitational, running a personal record 20:22 to go along with a second-place finish overall.

Game of the Week

Dunbar fell to Lely last week and will look to get back on track in a rivalry game against South Fort Myers on Friday.

Dunbar fell to Lely last week and will look to get back on track in a rivalry game against South Fort Myers on Friday.

South Fort Myers (4-0) at Dunbar (3-1)

What to watch for — South: The Wolfpack’s wins this season haven’t been easy and haven’t lacked drama. Yet they are the only undefeated team left in Lee County thanks to a defense that continues to get stops when they need it the most. Senior middle linebacker Tristan Perry leads the team in tackles with 36, including three for a loss. If QB Maurice Flournoy and his stable of talented running backs and receivers can start scoring points more consistently, South will be a tough out. Dunbar: For a little more than a quarter last week, the Tigers defense was as dominant as they’ve ever been. Then Lely QB Jacquez Carter torched it for four touchdowns showing a chink in Dunbar’s armor. The Tigers, who have a heated rivalry with South, will need to cut down on the dropped passes and penalties if they hope to get back on track.

The News-Press’ pick: South Fort Myers 21, Dunbar 20

Diaz’s 36-yard field goal lifts South past Fort Myers

Game previews

North Fort Myers (2-1) at Mariner (3-1)

What to watch for — North: A one-sided, season-opening loss to Fort Myers took away from the hype the Red Knights received in the preseason. Now they are flying under the radar, a position coach Earnest Graham likes. Graham will experience a homecoming as he returns to Mariner, his alma mater. The Red Knights have beaten Estero and Island Coast the last two week, improving with every snap. The question will be whether RB Zaquandre White’s ankle will let him go full-force Friday. He carried 14 times for 165 yards and a touchdown last week. Mariner: The Tritons played the field position game in a 14-6 win over Cypress Lake last week. That doesn’t really jive against a quick-strike offense like North. If the Tritons can move the chains and play keep away, they could be in a position to win the game in the fourth quarter.

The News-Press’ pick: North Fort Myers 26, Mariner 7

Island Coast (0-4, 0-1) at Lehigh (1-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Island Coast: The Gators are on a tough skid, having lost their last nine games dating back to 2015. Island Coast’s last win came against the Lightning in this same game in 2015. This season’s version of the Gators are struggling defensively, giving up an average of nearly 35 points per game. The offense hasn’t been much better, as it’s had difficulty putting together sustained drives on the ground or avoiding turnovers. Senior quarterback Kory Curtis, who’s completing just 44 percent of his passes, needs to take control early for the Gators to have a chance. They’ll be without senior wide receiver Marlon Gaymon for the third straight game. Lehigh: The Lightning finally broke through in the win column last Friday with a promising 26-14 win over Barron Collier, which featured 294 rushing yards and two touchdowns by running back Chris Curry. A steady dose of the bruising back would go a long way in giving the Lightning two straight wins. Over three weeks, Lehigh’s offense has recharged, much of that due to the play calling that has given Curry more touches. Defensively, however, the Lightning have also cut down the mistakes and have bent but not broke. Sophomore quarterback Delshawn Green could be a key factor in this game.

The News-Press’ pick: Lehigh 35, Island Coast 13

Charlotte (3-0) at Fort Myers (2-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Charlotte: This is a non-district game, but it’s also one of the best, long-standing rivalries in Southwest Florida. The Tarpons are coming off a 52-7 victory against Ida Baker that showcased five senior skill players: QB Dee Hicks, RBs Maleek Williams and D’Vonte Price and WRs Travon McClary and Jacob White.  “We’re pretty decent,” said Charlotte coach Binky Waldrop, who usually tries to downplay his team’s abilities. “We’ve got a little speed. We have 18 senior starters. We better be good, starting that many seniors. A lot of these kids have started since they were sophomores. We have a running quarterback for the first time in 20 years. He’s pretty fast.” Williams is bound for the University of Arkansas. Price had the bigger game last week, taking two carries for touchdowns on runs of 56 and 83 yards.  Fort Myers: The Green Wave are coming off an 18-16 loss to South Fort Myers in which star RB Darrian Felix suffered a deep bruise on his upper arm that inflamed his elbow and lower arm, making him questionable to play. “We’re not going to play him until he’s 100 percent,” Fort Myers coach Sam Sirianni Jr. said. Should Felix, who did not practice earlier in the week, not play, Xavier Perez, Yasias Young, Milan Tucker and Ben Stobugh should see a larger role on offense. “Darrian is obviously a spectacular athlete, but we still spread the carries around,” Sirianni said. “Just like we did in the second half.” The Tarpons are clearly the Green Wave’s biggest challenge this season, Sirianni said. “It’s one of the best Charlotte teams I’ve seen,” he said. “Binky has talked about this group for a couple of years. He’s a prophet.”

The News-Press pick: Charlotte 42, Fort Myers 14

Gulf Coast (1-3) at Estero (1-3)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch — Gulf Coast: Who’s in more need of a restart? Is it the Wildcats or the Sharks, who have disappointed with just one win to open the season, despite the return of 15 starters? Last weeks’ 50-3 loss to Naples was a crushing blow for a program many expected to compete for seven or eight wins. Now they’ll have to turn their efforts to the Wildcats, a team that has scored just two touchdowns in three losses. This may be the game to get the Sharks’ mojo back, especially with the team’s first District 7A-12 game looming against Riverdale. Senior running back Daniel Rendon has rushed for 403 yards and six touchdowns, while junior quarterback Kaden Frost has thrown four interceptions to just one touchdown. The Sharks score just a shade over 21 points per game. Estero: The Wildcats’ defense is playing just good enough to win. Problem is, the offense hasn’t given the defense much time to rest. The Wildcats have scored just 35 points in four games, including a 21-0 win over Lemon Bay in Week 2. They fell to Palmetto Ridge 22-8 last week, their third loss in four outings without scoring more than one touchdown. Coach Jeff Hanlon may need to examine his offense at this point, especially with quarterback Phillip Setterquist struggling at quarterback. On the bright side, the Wildcats opened last season with five straight losses before finishing the year with four wins in their last five.

The News-Press’ pick: Gulf Coast 35, Estero 7

Riverdale (1-2) at Ida Baker (1-3)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch — Riverdale: Defensive pressure and playmaking was the Raiders calling card in its 22-12 win over East Lee County on Friday. That pressure will need to continue with an Ida Baker offense that is capable of scoring points quickly. The Raiders also have to take advantage of their offensive line play, which can create holes for running backs Malcolm Spencer and Zach Sanders. The Raiders have scored just 28 points in three games against 61 points given up. Baker: Talk about a tough stretch. The Bulldogs can breathe a little after two losses to No. 2 Class 7A Bradenton Braden River and likely soon-to-be Class 6A ranked Charlotte. The Bulldogs, who have given up 94 points in their last two games, face a Raiders team that barely edged out the Jaguars last week. When Ida Baker’s offense is on, good things will happen through junior quarterback Toby Noland, who has passed for 744 yards and five touchdowns against just one interception. The Bulldogs running game, however, needs work, as its gained just 226 yards, an average of just over 50 yards per game and a meager 2.1 yards per carry, over the last four games. Defensively, Ida Baker has given up at least three touchdowns in all three of its losses.

The News-Press’ pick: Ida Baker 28, Riverdale 13

Riverdale overcomes miscues, tops East Lee

Bishop Verot (2-2, 1-0) at LaBelle (1-3, 0-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m

What to watch for — Verot: This is the second District 4A-6 matchup for both teams. The Vikings are coming off of a solid performance in their district opener in defeating Lake Placid 38-7 last week. QB Korey Besse went for 269 yards on 21 of 30 passes and looked early and often for Deven Thompkins who had 11 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown. Thompkins averages nearly 100 yards a game and has six touchdown receptions in four games this season. LaBelle: The Cowboys are coming off of a 42-28 defeat to Mulberry in their district opener last week. After falling being 28-6 at halftime, LaBelle rallied to make it an eight-point game with five minutes to go, but could not get any closer. Tray Williams continued his strong season with another 100-yard-plus game on the ground and two touchdowns. Johnathan Morales knocked home a 52-yard field goal for the Cowboys a week ago.

The News-Press’ pick: Bishop Verot 29, LaBelle 20

Cape Coral (0-3) at Cypress Lake (2-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for – Cape Coral: The Seahawks have scored just 13 points in losses to Sarasota (34-7), South Fort Myers (18-6) and Charlotte (56-0). “Offensively, we’re struggling right now,” Cape coach Larry Gary said. “Offensive line is our biggest focus. We made a few minor changes that we hope will help. Something is missing and we have to figure it out and get this thing going.” Cypress Lake: After opening the season with wins over North Port (40-7) and East Lee County (20-6), the Panthers have struggled to score in losses to Fort Myers (34-0) and Mariner (14-6). Coach Richie Rode said the key is re-establishing the running game and staying away from penalties. “I think we had a second-and-43 one time, which I never saw before,” Rode said. “I think Isaiah Thomas has had about 200 yards rushing called back.”

The News-Press’ pick: Cypress Lake 14, Cape Coral 13

Gateway Charter (1-2, 0-0) at Lake Placid (1-2, 0-1)

Time: 7 p.m

What to watch for — Gateway: The Griffins were off last week and are looking to open District 4A-6 play on a high note against the Dragons from Highlands County. After being shut out the first two games, Gateway exploded for 46 points, including 20 in the fourth quarter to defeat Evangelical Christian 46-19. Chris Ceasar found his footing with three touchdowns and 121 yards on the ground and was the target of two touchdowns through the air from Tyious Savoy on his way to 142 yards receiving. Lake Placid: The Dragons took a 38-7 loss at the hands of Bishop Verot in their district opener, but running back Katwan Ward shined with 144 yards on 20 carries in the defeat. Tay Williams also features in the Dragon running game as he averages around 100 yards a game to go with Ward’s 110 yards per game.

The News-Press’ pick: Gateway Charter 30, Lake Placid 20

Southwest Florida Christian Academy (2-2, 0-1) at First Baptist Academy (1-2, 1-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m

What to watch for — SFCA: This is the second District 2A-7 matchup for both teams. The Kings are coming off of a tough district opening loss to St. John Neumann, allowing a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to fall 23-17. Offensively, SFCA had a balanced attack and moved the ball well, but coach Mike Marciano was displeased with his team’s discipline. “I have never seen us have as much of a lack of discipline as we did tonight,” Marciano said. FBA: The Lions rolled Evangelical Christian in their district opener last week 48-12, and held a 34-0 lead after the first quarter. Jayce Howell went for 106 yards on just six carries, and has been the offensive leader for First Baptist. The 2A semifinalists from a year ago won a tight game 14-7 a year ago in this matchup.

The News-Press’ pick: First Baptist 23, SFCA 18

Lee County Fab 5

The Fort Myers High School Green Wave traveled to South Fort Myers High School Friday, September 16, for a prime-time match-up against the Wolfpack. The final score was Fort Myers 16, South Fort Myers 18.

The Fort Myers High School Green Wave traveled to South Fort Myers High School Friday, September 16, for a prime-time match-up against the Wolfpack. The final score was Fort Myers 16, South Fort Myers 18.

1. South Fort Myers (4-0): The Wolfpack, the only undefeated team in the county, could take a big step in wrapping up the Lee County Athletic Conference title with a win over Dunbar.

2. Dunbar (3-1): Which Tigers defense will show up this week against South?

3. Fort Myers (2-2): Charlotte, which beat the Green Wave by 42 points last season, is a tough opponent to get back on track against.

4. North Fort Myers (2-1): Mariner product Earnest Graham and his Red Knights won’t overlook his alma mater on the road.

5. Mariner (3-1): The Tritons will need to score more than the 17 points per game they’re averaging to beat North.

Cypress Lake’s Keyon Brawner runs the ball on Friday, September 23, 2016, at Cypress Lake High School.

Keyon Brawner may want to buy Kelsey Demps lunch today.

Something.

Demps saved Brawner’s bacon with a last-minute interception as Cypress Lake edged Cape Coral 14-12 on Friday night in the Panthers’ homecoming.

The Panthers (3-2) looked to have the game sealed after Chris Joseph’s interception and then a first-down run by Isaiah Thomas (26 carries, 68 yards).

However, Brawner – who scored his team’s second touchdown – fumbled the ball away at his team’s 25 with a minute-and-a-half left.

Two plays later, Demps made a diving pick of Cape Coral QB Chase Sealander just before going out of bounds to get the ball back for Cypress Lake.

Demps, who scored his team’s first touchdown, had his second interception of the night. The Panthers had four picks.

“I saw the ball come out and I went for it,” he said with a big smile. “I was a little nervous (he was out of bounds).

“It’s homecoming. It feels good.”

Cypress Lake Richie Rode echoed those thoughts.

“We made it close, real close, for sure,” he said. “This is huge, against a good team, an established team. To win on homecoming. We’re halfway through the season and have a winning record. We’ve surpassed our win total from the last three, four, five years.”

The game ended at 11:45 p.m. Lightning delayed the game by 55 minutes and then again at the end of the first quarter.

Taking advantage of two 15-yard penalties on Cape Coral, Cypress Lake took the opening kickoff 75 yards.

Demps took a reverse and went 11 yards for a touchdown with 6:11 left in the first quarter.

Thanks to a Cypress Lake fumble, Cape Coral took over on the Panthers’ 1. After two running plays went backward, Sealander connected with DJ Lewis on a 10-yard scoring pass.

Finding a seam, then busting through it, Brawner scored from the 12 with 4:13 left in the second quarter. Thomas added the 2-point run, which turned out to be the difference in the same.

Behind the running of Isaac Washington (20 carries, 144 yards), the Seahawks had some nice drives but couldn’t finish. They drew within 14-12 on Osbel Hernandez’s 60 interception return in the third quarter but the Panthers sacked Sealander on the 2-point pass.

“The defense has been incredible,” said Rode, who played for Cape Coral coach Larry Gary at Cypress Lake. “The offense didn’t put it in great situations.

“Our guys are gonna enjoy this homecoming.”

Cypress Lake's Isaiah Thomas is tackled by Cape Coral's Luke Shulz on Friday, September 23, 2016, at Cypress Lake High School.

Curry, who garnered 26 percent of the vote, is coming off a 311-yard rushing performance with four touchdowns on just 14 carries in a 43-6 win over Island Coast last week. He scored on runs of 16, 93, 76 and 56 yards. He has 605 yards and six scores over the past two games.

Goll, who earned 24 percent of the vote, posted a season- and career-best time of 19:28 at the North Port Invitational on Saturday, finishing in 10th place during the girls elite race.

A pair of Bishop Verot athletes took third and fourth place.

Verot outside hitter Mindie Mabry, a Harvard commit, finished with 19 percent of the vote after registering 98 kills, 44 digs, 10 aces and seven kills over seven games in a five-day period, six of which produced wins for the Vikings. Bishop Verot went 4-1 during the CM Cares Invitational at Southwest Ranches.

Vikings cornerback/receiver Deven Thompkins, who earned 14 percent of the vote, closed a comeback 28-24 win over LaBelle on Saturday with an interception. He also added 191 all-purpose yards, including an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown and 102 yards of receiving on four catches with another score.

Other nominees were Fort Myers golfer Kellie Weisse, Estero golfer Luke Farmer, Riverdale bowler Cydnee Whiteleather, Cape Coral bowler Andrew Junipa, Estero swimmer Alina Faunce, North Fort Myers swimmer Adis Muhamedagic and LaBelle cross country runner Yoan Prado.

Fort Myers (2-3) will host Lehigh (2-2) in a District 6A-11 game Friday at Edison Stadium. The matchup is the News-Press Game of the Week.

Lehigh (2-2, 0-0) at Fort Myers (2-3, 0-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Lehigh: This is a District 6A-11 contest. The Lightning’s two straight wins over Barron Collier and Island Coast corresponded with monster rushing performances from RB Chris Curry. The junior has run for 605 yards and six touchdowns during the stretch. It wouldn’t make sense to change up the offensive game plan of feeding him the ball. Defensively, the Lightning has improved from week to week as it held Island Coast to just six points in its most recent outing. Fort Myers: With injured RB Darrian Felix on the shelf, the Green Wave will have to find different ways to move the chains. The team struggled with that after going up on state-ranked Charlotte early last week at home. Fort Myers will have to make sure every drive ends with a kick — an extra point, a field goal or a kick — after turnovers derailed its chances last week.

The News-Press’ pick: Fort Myers 21, Lehigh 13

WINNER: The News-Press Athlete of the Week Sept. 19-24

Game previews

Port Charlotte (4-0, 1-0) at North Fort Myers (3-1, 1-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Port Charlotte: This is a District 6A-10 game. The Pirates have given up just two touchdowns in four games and have shut out their last two opponents – Sarasota Booker and Cape Coral – by a combined 84 points. They’ve outscored opponents 151-14 in total. Led by running back Marc Jean-Louis, who had 127 yards and two touchdowns against the Seahawks, the Pirates pound the ball on offense. Head coach Jordan Ingram has won no less than six games in every season with Port Charlotte. The Pirates also picked up a few votes in the most recent Class 6A AP poll. North: Three straight wins have given the Red Knights much needed confidence heading into a critical district matchup against the Pirates. North was cautious with senior Zaquandre White in a 34-21 win over Mariner, but expect the Red Knights to feature the elusive running back even more here. North also has at least four other capable tailbacks, including sophomore Hunter Kobylanski, who surprised with 111 yards against the Tritons. Freshman quarterback Nick Perez has flourished in three starts, throwing for 307 yards and two touchdowns, including a season-high 172 yards last week. Linebacker Fa’Najae Gotay leads the defense and also packs a punch at running back.

The News-Press’ pick: North Fort Myers 28, Port Charlotte 27

Gulf Coast (2-3, 0-0) at Riverdale (1-3, 0-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Gulf Coast: This is a District 7A-12 game. The Sharks’ defense and special teams certainly made an impression during a 26-0 win over Estero last week, intercepting three passes and hitting three field goals, but there’s still room for the offense to grow. They could find trouble running against a powerful Raiders defensive line, which limited Ida Baker last week to just 42 yards rushing. This is a must-win game for the Sharks, who beat the Raiders 32-14 in this game last year, if they want to clinch their third straight trip to the postseason. Running backs Daniel Rendon and DeMarcus Townsend have combined for 781 yards and 12 touchdowns.  Riverdale: Ill-advised turnovers and weaknesses in coverage hurt the Raiders in their 20-17 loss to Ida Baker last week. But Riverdale showed glimpses of promise over stretches, including extending drives for much of the second half. They’re getting outscored by opponents 81-45 over four games, however, and will need to shore up defensive mistakes. The Raiders are in search of their first postseason appearance since 2010.

The News-Press’ pick: Gulf Coast 24, Riverdale 21

New high school football playoff plan OK’d

Island Coast (0-5, 0-1) at Charlotte (4-0, 1-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Island Coast: This is a District 6-10 game. The Gators are giving up over 36 points per game in five losses and saw Lehigh roll up 43 points last week. It gets no easier this week against a potent Tarpons offense. Senior quarterback Kory Curtis has 772 yards passing and five touchdowns against two interceptions, while seniors Jerry Cambric and Calvin Smith have combined for nearly 370 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Charlotte: The Tarpons, who still sit outside the top 10 in the most recent Class 6A AP poll, earned a big win over Fort Myers last week. Over the last two weeks, Charlotte outscored opponents 76-13, though the Green Wave held the team to its lowest offensive output of the season. Charlotte has averaged over 400 yards per game. Senior quarterback D’andre Hicks has gone 26 of 49 for 461 with six touchdowns while Arkansas commit Maleek Williams has rushed for 496 yards and seven scores.

The News-Press’ pick: Charlotte: 42, Island Coast 13

Cypress Lake (3-2, 0-1) at Immokalee (1-3, 0-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

What to watch for — Cypress: This is a District 5A-12 game. The Panthers defense helped snap a two-game losing streak with four interceptions, including a Kelsey Demps pick that sealed last week’s 14-12 win over Cape Coral. The offense, which averaged 3.5 yards per carry last week, will need to slow the game down to keep Immokalee’s high-powered offense off the field. Immokalee: The Indians stunned powerhouse Naples in the first half last week by piling up 298 yards of offense and 34 points before losing 60-42. Junior QB Nathaniel Betancourt threw for 267 yards and five touchdowns in the first half and will look to stay hot against the Panthers.

The News-Press’ pick: Immokalee 34, Cypress Lake 17

Ida Baker (2-3, 0-1) at Cape Coral (0-4, 0-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Baker: This is a District 6A-10 matchup. It’s a must-win for both teams aspiring to make the playoffs. The Bulldogs are coming off a 20-17 victory against Riverdale. “We’ve still got some work to do,” Baker coach Brian Conn said. “We’ve got to score more points, and we’ve got to run the ball better. Our schedule has been very difficult to this point. We got through it, and hopefully we’re a better team for it.” WR Luke Endsley made an impact last week, catching seven passes for 177 yards, including a 72-yard TD. QB Toby Noland completed 11 of 16 passes for 196 yards and the score. The Bulldogs lost to Dunbar, Braden River and Charlotte before returning to the win column last week. “They’ve had a tough schedule, too,” Conn said. “It’s a good game for our two schools. We’ll expect that we’ll get their best.” Cape: The Seahawks have been struggling, most recently with a 14-12 loss to Cypress Lake. There was a silver lining with the performance of RB Isaac Washington who rushed 20 times for 144 yards.

The News-Press’ pick: Ida Baker 28, Cape Coral 14

Lely (3-2, 1-0) at Mariner (3-2, 1-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Lely: This is a District 5A-12 game. The Trojans are averaging about 30 points a game while giving up the same amount. A shootout favors Lely, which is coming off a 32-31 overtime loss to Barron Collier. Mariner: The Tritons want to control the ball with RB Chance Reiter (436 yards rushing) and the clock while relying on a solid defense. Mariner has allowed 0, 6 and 19 points in three victories.

The News-Press’ pick: Lely 21, Mariner 14

Bishop Verot (3-2, 2-0) at Avon Park (5-0, 2-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

What to watch for — Verot: This is a District 4A-6 game. This one served as a de facto district championship last season and could very well do so again. Despite piling up 538 yards of offense last week the Vikings needed a fourth-quarter comeback to knock off LaBelle on the road. Yards won’t be so easy to come by against an Avon Park defense that ranks first in Class 4A in points against. Avon Park: The Red Devils have given up just three points all season in their five wins. Junior Montrae Braswell leads the team in rushing with 569 yards and five touchdowns.

The News-Press’ pick: Avon Park 42, Bishop Verot 24

Estero (1-3, 0-0) at East Lee County (1-3, 0-0)

Time: 7 p.m

What to watch for — Estero: This is the District 6A-11 opener for both teams. The Wildcats were defeated by Gulf Coast 23-0 a week ago, but only trailed 6-0 at halftime. Estero was shorthanded offensively with Willie Neal out of the lineup with an ankle injury, but he is expected to return this week. Defensively, the Wildcats have performed well all season long, including a shutout against Lemon Bay and only allowing 14 points against North Fort Myers. With Neal back for this district opening game, look for the offense to be able to generate points and keep the defense fresher in the second half. East Lee: The Jaguars were off last week and were defeated two weeks ago by Riverdale 22-12. Outside of a 41-0 defeat to Sebring in Week 3, East Lee’s defense has been strong allowing 42 points in the other three contests. Lothario Adderly is the key to East Lee’s success as he is averaging over 100 yards a game on the ground this season. With an offense that keep it on the ground primarily, the Jaguars will need to rely on Adderly and Cortavious Lee to carry the load and find holes in the Estero defense.

The News-Press’ pick: Estero 24, East Lee County 18

Final scores: High school football, Week 5

Gateway Charter (1-3, 0-1) at LaBelle (1-4, 0-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m

What to watch for — Gateway: This is a District 4A-6 matchup. The Griffins were shut out by Lake Placid last week 40-0 and struggled to stop the run in their district opener. All five touchdowns allowed were on the ground. Gateway allowed almost 300 rushing yards in the defeat. For the season, the Griffins have been outscored 120-46. Chris Ceasar will have to have a big game as he will be featured heavily in the Gateway game plan offensively. LaBelle: The Cowboys are coming off a tough 28-24 loss to Bishop Verot on Saturday after their game was moved due to weather. With the game tied at 21 heading to the fourth quarter, LaBelle took a lead on a Johnathan Morales 43-yard field goal, but allowed a touchdown with eight minutes to go. Tray Williams had two touchdowns of 50-plus yards and Tyler Burton had his best performance at quarterback this season with 122 yards and two touchdowns through the air. LaBelle has competed well in their last three games, but haven’t been able to close out games.

The News-Press’ pick: LaBelle 33, Gateway Charter 15

Moore Haven (3-2, 1-1) at Evangelical Christian (0-4, 0-1)

Time: 7 p.m

What to watch for — Moore Haven: This is a District 2A-7 game. The Terriers fell to district foe Community School of Naples 48-13 last Friday and trailed 42-6 at halftime. Moore Haven committed four turnovers and had trouble containing Cooper Weiss and Joe Lang. The Terriers fared well with Marco Island the week before in their district opener by winning 45-7. Quarterback John Cox has scored eight rushing touchdowns in five games and has scored in every game this season. Containing him will be key for Evangelical Christian. ECS: The Sentinels come in after a 15-6 defeat at the hands of St. Petersburg Shorecrest Prep. ECS had a strong defensive performance after allowing an average of 44 points per game the three previous weeks. Another strong performance will be needed on this side of the ball with the Sentinel offense struggling. Jimmy Mera has performed well out of the backfield, but needs help from quarterback Logan Pearlman and the other skill position players.

The News-Press’ pick: Moore Haven 34, Evangelical Christian 13

Ocala St. John Lutheran (1-3) at Canterbury (2-1)

Time: 7 p.m

What to watch for — St. John Lutheran: The Saints were defeated 40-8 by St. Augustine St. Joesph Academy a week ago. Malachi Sampson and Joshua Pinkston in the backfield are the key threats for St. John Lutheran, which has been outscored 92-58 in their four games this season. Canterbury: The Cougars were off last week, but look to continue the momentum coming off an impressive victory over St. Petersburg Canterbury 34-6 two weeks ago. Brendan Fritz ran for 140 yards and three touchdowns and head coach Derek Crudup was pleased with how his offensive line performed in the victory. With a week off, expect the Cougars to follow a similar formula for success against a Saints defense that allowed over 200 yards on the ground a week ago.

The News-Press’ pick: Canterbury 26, St. John Lutheran 15

The Lee County Fab 5

North Fort Myers (3-1) jumped to No. 2 in the Lee County Fab 5.

North Fort Myers (3-1) jumped to No. 2 in the Lee County Fab 5.

1. South Fort Myers (5-0): The Wolfpack are on bye. Looking past Ida Baker and Riverdale and on to their clash with Naples could be a mistake.

2. North Fort Myers (3-1): The Red Knights have rebounded nicely since a season-opening loss to Fort Myers. A huge district game against Port Charlotte awaits.

3. Dunbar (3-2): The Tigers have lost their last two games by a total of eight points. A game against Island Coast gives them a chance to get back on track.

4. Fort Myers (2-3): The Green Wave face what should be a de facto district championship game against Lehigh.

5. Bishop Verot (3-2): A road district game against 5-0 Avon Park will tell a lot about the Vikings.

Big efforts push Easterly, Beck to wins at LCAC

North Fort Myers High School’s Kayla Easterly races in the Hoptar Invitational at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres on Saturday. Easterly finished third.

Talent doesn’t always equal wins in cross country, as Estero senior Arye Beck and North Fort Myers senior Kayla Easterly know well.

Entering the Lee County Athletic Conference championships at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres, the duo had a combined two victories in varsity races over four seasons.

That numbered doubled on Tuesday.

Beck hadn’t won at the Veterans Park course in seven attempts prior, but his finishing time of 16:43 was his third straight trip under 17 minutes in the last two weeks.

“Bout time,” he said.

Easterly, meanwhile, powered through the finish in 19:14, which was just six seconds off her personal record. She defeated defending champ Krissy Gear of Fort Myers, who was third.

“I didn’t expect to win this at all,” said Easterly, who is also overcoming an anemia diagnosis. “But seeing that I had a pretty big lead, and I had a couple seconds ahead of everyone. I just tried to find everything inside me to kick more and try to win.”

While Beck’s finish set the tone in the boys race and was one of three Estero finishes inside the top four, Fort Myers pulled away with three straight places in 6-7-8 and outscored the Wildcats by three points in the team competition.

“We were trying to match man-against-man against Estero,” Fort Myers coach Yancey Palmer said. “We felt if we could win three out of those first five points then theoretically we win. They beat us to the first three, but we were able to beat them to 4-5 and beyond. Our depth is definitely what saves us.”

The Green Wave’s Josh Kennedy was second in 16:53, while Estero landed Evan Williams and Hugh Brittenham in third and fourth overall. Fort Myers followed with Sam Hordinski, Evan Babatz and Nick Carpenter. The top seven places earned All-county honors.

Estero High School's Arye Beck, left, competes Saturday in the Estero DDD Invitational at Estero Community Park.

Estero High School’s Arye Beck, left, competes Saturday in the Estero DDD Invitational at Estero Community Park.

In the girls race, the Green Wave continued to race strong just three days after a big race in North Carolina and were led by second-place finisher Fiona Kurland, who had a time of 19:22. The Green Wave cruised in the girls race with 29 points.

Kurland whisked off any fatigue and went with Easterly after the mile and a half mark, almost catching her in the final moments before Easterly had one final kick of her own.

“I feel like every week I just keep racing better than the week before,” Kurland said.

Gear was third in 19:37 following her performance at the Great American Race Festival, where she ran a season-best 18:28.

Riverdale junior Chelsey Oliver, who’s broken out in a big way over the last two weeks, was fourth in 20:06. The Green Wave’s Kailyn Kaminski was fifth, Estero’s Megan Giovanniello was sixth and Cape Coral’s Abby Kohlmeier was seventh.

“I’ve just tried to get better and better,” Oliver said. “This race, I wasn’t looking for time. I was more looking for placement.”

The morning, however, belonged to Easterly, who surged confidently in the final 1,500 meters. Easterly said the win gave her a fresh breath of air following a few shaky weeks following the diagnosis.

“It’s definitely a good feeling knowing that I had some drawbacks,” she said. “I was still able to win and get a good time. I’m optimistic now for upcoming races.”

Beck, meanwhile, finally won a race inside county lines after going for it on a number of previous attempts. His only previous win as at the District 3A-12 race last year at Palmetto Ridge.

“I’ve been working hard, so I was really going for this,” he said.

Coaches can email scores to sports@news-press.com or call in scores at 239-335-0357. The deadline for each night’s results is 10 p.m.

Kyle, a junior, shot a a-under par 35 at Stoneybrook Golf Club to lead the Vikings to a match victory over Canterbury on Sept. 29.

Game of the week

Luke Endsley and Ida Baker host South Fort Myers Friday in The News-Press Game of the Week.

Luke Endsley and Ida Baker host South Fort Myers Friday in The News-Press Game of the Week.

South Fort Myers (5-0) at Ida Baker (2-4)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — South: This is a non-district game. The Wolfpack are coming off a bye week, prior to which they defeated Dunbar 21-16. RB E’Quan Dorris rushed for 100 yards and a TD on 19 carries in that game and has been spearheading the offense along with QB Maurice Flournoy. “Maurice gives us the run-pass option,” South Fort Myers coach Matt Holderfield said. “That was really big for us.” Holderfield also hopes to get some playing time for junior QBs Will Morris and Tyler Lackey, which would allow Flournoy to focus on his duties as a CB. Ida Baker: The Bulldogs are coming off a 46-36 lost to Cape Coral in which they surrendered 356 rushing yards to the Seahawks’ Isaac Washington. The good news: Baker continued to have a solid passing attack as QB Toby Noland passed for 382 yards and five TDs, with Luke Endsley catching 12 passes for 155 yards and three TDs. “Our biggest thing, and why we’re excited about playing against them, is we’ll get a good look at a team that’s going to spread the field and throw first,” Holderfield said. “A pass-friendly team will be good for our defense to see.”

The News-Press pick: South Fort Myers 35, Ida Baker 28

Game previews

Dunbar (3-2) at Island Coast (0-6)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Dunbar: This is a non-district game. The Tigers had an entire bye week to stew over two straight losses to Lely and South. In each of those games Dunbar jumped out to double-digit leads before faltering. The Tigers offense managed just seven points combined in the second halves in the losses. Offensive coordinator Dwayne Donnell must find a way to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers like WRs Shocky Jacques-Louis and Kenny Benjamin. Running speedster Seneca Milledge out of the Wildcat was highly effective early against South. Island Coast: The Gators didn’t lose more than five games in a season in the school’s first seven years of existence. Now the team is all but guaranteed a losing record for the second straight season. The defense is surrendering more than 40 points a game and must find a way to stop the Dunbar running game led by Lajuan Preston and Keanu Young. In addition, the offensive line must play its best game of the season to protect senior QB Kory Curtis. Dunbar DE Rocky Jacques-Louis had 13 sacks through the first four games of the season.

The News-Press’ pick: Dunbar 31, Island Coast 20

Bishop Verot (3-3) at East Lee County (2-3)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Verot: This is a non-district game. Verot is coming off a 56-7 district loss to undefeated Avon Park where it scored more points than all five of the Red Devils’ previous opponents. Junior quarterback Korey Besse continues to be among the Lee County leaders in passing with 1,210 yards and eight touchdowns. However, Verot is averaging just 78.5 yards per game on the ground. East Lee: The Jaguars posted their first district win in coach Dave Smith’s tenure when it held on against Estero last week. Senior RB Lothario Adderley has logged 100-yard rushing performances in four of East Lee’s five games and could be an integral part in keeping the Verot offense off the field. Jaguars defensive backs will be tested by Verot junior receiver Deven Thompkins.

The News-Press’ pick: Bishop Verot 38, East Lee County 13

Cape Coral (1-4) at Lehigh (2-3)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Cape: This is a non-district game. The Seahawks are coming off their first win of the season, a 46-36 shootout against Ida Baker. Senior Isaac Washington rushed for 356 yards and five touchdowns in the game. The Seahawks amassed nearly 500 yards on the ground, scored on a fumble return and hit a 31-yard field goal. In five games quarterback Chase Sealander has thrown for 412 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions. Cape Coral is giving up on average nearly 32 points per game. It lost this game 34-23 last year. Lehigh: The Lightning dropped their last game 42-7 to Fort Myers in a District 6A-11 game. The Lightning are scoring 18 points against 22 points given up. Junior Chris Curry, who continued his hot stretch with 134 yards in the loss to the Green Wave, leads the team with 945 yards on 84 carries with eight touchdowns. Quarterback Delshawn Green is 14 of 21 for 207 yards in his past two games. Receivers Russell Brown and D’Marquise Collins are the Lightning’s top two receivers.

The News-Press’ pick: Lehigh 35, Cape Coral 31

Mull: The can’t-miss persistence of Cape Coral’s Isaac Washington

Cypress Lake (3-3) at Lemon Bay (0-5)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Cypress Lake: This is a non-district game. The Panthers have lost two out of their last three games. Senior Isaiah Thomas leads the team in rushing, while sophomore Kelsey Demps and Chris Joseph will also see carries. Quarterback Keyon Brawner is a dual-threat in the Panthers’ wing-T offense. Cypress Lake is giving up nearly 22 points per game and scoring on average just 13. The Panthers lost this game 28-20 last season. Lemon Bay: The Manta Rays are winless and giving up nearly 24 points per game. The team has scored 38 total points and has three games of one touchdown or less. Hayden Wolf leads the offense at quarterback, while Victor Meller, Brayden Curry and Hunter Weir will take carries at running back.  This begins a stretch against teams with a combined 6-18 record over the last five games.

The News-Press’ pick: Cypress Lake 28, Lemon Bay 7

Golden Gate (1-5) at Estero (1-4)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Golden Gate: This is a non-district game. The Titans are rebounding off a 57-26 loss to Naples last week. And while defensively the team hasn’t been good, giving up on average 37 points per game, the offense is getting better. The Titans have scored at least three touchdowns in their last three games. Senior Chris Nazaire and sophomore Jouvensly Bazile have combined for 487 rushing yards and averaged at least six yards per carry. Quarterback Jay Herard leads the offense, while Justenley Philippe leads the defense with 50 tackles. Senior Claudin Cherelus has been strong on the defensive side of the field. Estero: The Wildcats, who have regressed following a 4-win season in 2015, were dispatched by East Lee County 14-6 on Friday, which was their third straight loss. They’ve averaged just seven points per game against just 16 points given up. Estero has four games of scoring one touchdown or less. A year ago, the Wildcats won this game 21-20. Quarterback Philip Setterquist leads the offense, while Willie Neal, Victor Shelly and Max Bosi take carries. Neal has been the team’s most prolific offensive piece so far.

The News-Press’ pick: Estero 21, Golden Gate 20

Evangelical Christian (0-5, 0-2) at St. John Neumann (3-2, 2-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

What to watch for — ECS: This is a District 2A-7 matchup. The Sentinels are still seeking their first victory of the season and are coming off of a 35-6 defeat at the hands of Moore Haven. Jimmy Mera was limited a week ago, but Correy Massey stepped in with a strong performance at running back, going over 100 yards. Mera, Massey and Franco Joesph if all healthy can be a formidable running back trio this week. Neumann: The Celtics posted back-to-back district victories the past two weeks, but fell to Community School of Naples last week 47-21. The Celtics have their own trio with their running game that all ran for more than 65 yards last week in Jensen Jones, Ross Zepeda and Stanley Johnson. This matchup likely comes down to who can convert in the red zone as both teams move the ball well offensively.

The News-Press’ pick: St. John Neumann 34, Evangelical Christian 18

Riverdale (1-4) at Arcadia DeSoto County (1-3)

Time: 10 a.m., Saturday

What to watch for — Riverdale: This is a non-district game. The Raiders couldn’t keep up with high-powered Gulf Coast in a 39-21 district loss where the Sharks passed for 300 yards. This figures to be a bounce-back game against a team that’s managed to score just 28 points through four games. Riverdale will need more production from its running backs, who gained just 23 yards on 22 carries last week, and have problems securing the ball. DeSoto: The Bulldogs turned the ball over three times and were tackled 25 times for a loss in a 35-6 loss to Bradenton Southeast last week.

The News-Press’ pick: Riverdale 27, DeSoto County 6

Gulf Coast’s Frost, Genal lead Sharks past Riverdale

Southwest Florida Christian Academy (2-3, 0-2) at Moore Haven (4-2, 2-1)

Time: Monday, 6 p.m.

What to watch for — SFCA: This is a District 2A-7 matchup. The Kings were off last week and have lost three straight games after a 2-0 start. It has been a struggle for the Kings to generate points, but Kobe Gee at quarterback has had good moments this year. Chase Reed has struggled to get involved offensively, but can turn it on any given week. Moore Haven: The Terriers are coming off of a 35-6 victory over Evangelical Christian last week and were led by another standout performance by dual-threat quarterback John Cox. Cox went 6-for-8 with 108 yards and two touchdowns through the air and ran for 132 yards on just six carries and two more touchdowns. He has 16 touchdowns on the season so far and will be a handful for the SFCA defense.

The News-Press’ pick: Moore Haven 37, Southwest Florida Christian 23

Canterbury (3-1) at Winter Haven All Saints Academy (3-2)

Time: Monday, 4 p.m.

What to watch for — Canterbury: The Cougars are riding a three game winning streak into this road contest. Canterbury dispatched St.John Lutheran 24-0 last week and are averaging a shade over 30 points a game during this three-game stretch. Jalen Ellis has been the Cougars’ big-play threat and will be looked upon again to deliver. All Saints: The Saints will rely on running back tandem Dale Booker and Fisher Williams. The duo ran for four touchdowns in a 34-13 victory over St. Petersburg Canterbury last week.

The News-Press’ pick: Canterbury 27, All Saints Academy 26

Lee County Fab 5

Darrian Felix and Fort Myers jumped to No. 2 in the Lee County Fab 5.

Darrian Felix and Fort Myers jumped to No. 2 in the Lee County Fab 5.

1. South Fort Myers (5-0): The high-powered Ida Baker offense poses an interesting test for the only undefeated team in Lee County.

2. Fort Myers (3-3): Darrian Felix is back. The Greenies, who are on a bye this week, could be a dangerous team moving forward.

3. Dunbar (2-2): Expect the Tigers to get back on track this week against Island Coast after two straight losses.

4. North Fort Myers (3-2): A bye week looms before next week’s crucial district matchup with undefeated Charlotte.

5. Bishop Verot (3-3): East Lee County isn’t a cupcake game this year.

Game of the Week

Lehigh will host rival East Lee County in a District 6A-11 matchup in The News-Press' Game of the Week on Friday.

Lehigh will host rival East Lee County in a District 6A-11 matchup in The News-Press’ Game of the Week on Friday.

East Lee County (3-3, 1-0) at Lehigh (3-3, 0-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — East Lee: This is a District 6A-11 game. The Jaguars have won three games for the first time in four years and could secure their first postseason berth since 2012 with a win and an Estero loss to Fort Myers. Lothario Adderley and Cortavius Lee have combined to rush for close to 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns. The onus will be on the defense, led by sophomore LB Emmanuel Devaney, to slow down Lehigh RB Chris Curry, who has been tearing through Southwest Florida defenses. The Jaguars may be able to frustrate the 205-pound back if they can deny him the big play and force him into several small gains. Lehigh: The Lightning got a boost from their defense last week when they held Cape Coral to just 109 yards in a 28-0 victory. Senior RB Jalane Nelson proved to be the perfect compliment to Curry with 105 yards and two touchdowns last week. The Lightning still have a bad taste in the mouths after losing a do-or-die game to Estero last season and missing out on the state playoffs.

The News-Press’ pick: Lehigh 27, East Lee County 24

Game previews

Riverdale (2-4, 0-1) at South Fort Myers (6-0, 0-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Riverdale: This is a District 7A-12 game. The Raiders haven’t qualified for the postseason since 2010 and will have to go another year if they don’t knock off Lee County’s top team. Playing in a three-team district and having lost to Gulf Coast a couple weeks ago, the best Riverdale can hope for is a win over South and a Gulf Coast win over South in a few weeks to get in. A win over South and a Gulf Coast loss to South in a few weeks could create a three-way tie. The Raiders offensive line may have started to find some cohesiveness last week as it sprung RB Malcolm Spencer for 134 yards in a 22-12 win over Arcadia DeSoto County last week. South: The Wolfpack begin their quest for a fifth straight district title this week. Coming off a bye, South cruised to its easiest win of the season 50-21 over Ida Baker last week. After a quiet start to the season, senior RB E’Quan Dorris went off for 208 rushing yards and remains very dangerous in a potent backfield that also features Riley Ware and Eddie Teague. Riverdale has been prone to turning the ball over this season and South is the type of team that will make the Raiders pay for turnovers.

The News-Press’ pick: South Fort Myers 38, Riverdale 10

North Fort Myers (3-2, 1-1) at Charlotte (5-0, 2-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for – North Fort Myers: This is a pivotal District 6A-10 game. The Red Knights are on the outside looking in for a playoff spot after a 38-34 loss to Port Charlotte on Sept. 30. They’re also facing a decision at quarterback, where they have two capable starters. Freshman Nick Perez won three straight games when junior Ben Pogue was out with a concussion, but Pogue was 9 of 16 for 127 yards in the loss two weeks ago. This marks a big game for senior Zaquandre White, who has rushed for over 300 yards in his last three games. White and running back Fa’Najae Gotay combined for 285 yards against Port Charlotte. The Red Knights have scored at least 27 in their last three games. With a loss, North Fort Myers would be eliminated from the playoff chase for the 10th straight year.  Charlotte: The Tarpons have put up over 40 points in four of their five wins this season and have given up two touchdowns or less in three of those games. Head coach Binky Waldrop has made his squad a dominating rushing attack with 309 yards per game, while senior quarterback D’andre Hicks has been very capable at quarterback, going 29 of 52 for 587  yards and seven touchdowns. Running back Maleek Williams, an Arkansas commit, has 739 yards and 11 touchdowns. He rushed for 243 yards against Island Coast on Sept. 30. Andrew Grace has seven receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown.

The News-Press’ pick: Charlotte 28, North Fort Myers 24

Cypress Lake (3-4, 0-2) at Dunbar (4-2, 0-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for – Cypress Lake: This is a District 5A-12 game. The Panthers, who lost this game 37-0 last year, are coming off a heartbreaking 20-19 loss to Lemon Bay last week. Sophomore Kelsey Demps rushed for a season-high 168 yards, but the Panthers missed an extra point in the first quarter and had a go-ahead 2-point conversion fail in the fourth frame. They also gave up more than 300 yards in the loss and have struggled at times on offense to score and hold on to the ball. Dunbar: The Tigers captured a 41-0 win over Island Coast last week, which snapped a two-game skid. Seven players had carries in the game and senior Lajuan Preston had a team-high 135 yards and two touchdowns. Dunbar limited Island Coast to just two first downs and minus-34 yards on offense. The Tigers were leading 28-0 at halftime. The game marks the first of three straight district games.

The News-Press’ pick: Dunbar 35, Cypress Lake 14

Dunbar gets back on track, routs Island Coast

Fort Myers (3-3, 1-0) at Estero (1-7, 0-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for – Fort Myers: This is a District 6A-11 contest. The Green Wave snapped a two-game losing streak with a 42-7 win over Lehigh. The victory was a critical district game that could set up Fort Myers, which scored 28 first half points against the Lightning, as the district champion two seasons in a row. Running back Darrian Felix came back after an elbow injury and rushed for 148 yards and had four touchdowns. The Green Wave completed just one pass against Lehigh for 50 yards and rushed 37 times for 319 yards. Estero: The Wildcats have lost five straight games and have failed to score more than two touchdowns in each game. They’re coming off a 20-13 loss to Golden Gate where they scored two late fourth quarter touchdowns. Estero, which lost this game 48-8 last year, is scoring just 9 points per game but the defense has been respectable, letting in less than three touchdowns per game. At times, Estero’s Willie Neal has been the team’s only reliable offense. He ran for 51 yards in the loss to Golden Gate.

The News-Press’ pick: Fort Myers 42, Estero 7

Mariner (3-3, 1-1) at Immokalee (3-3, 1-0)

Time: 7:00 p.m.

What to watch for – Mariner: This is a District 5A-12 game. The Tritons, who lost this game 37-6 last year, are coming off a 55-0 loss to Lely, their second straight defeat. Running back Chance Reiter, who rushed for over 100 yards in his three previous games, had just eight yards in 10 carries. Mariner is giving up over 22 points a game and scoring just 14. Immokalee: The Indians defeated Palmetto Ridge 43-13 last week, their second straight win. Immokalee is averaging over 40 points in its last four games, which include two losses by a combined 19 points. The Indians have two losses by less than three points. Head coach Rodelin Anthony has implemented a versatile offense that features junior Fred Green, who rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns in the team’s win over Palmetto Ridge.

The News-Press’ pick: Immokalee 35, Mariner 20

Cape Coral (1-5, 1-1) at Island Coast (0-7, 0-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Cape: This is a District 6A-10 game. There haven’t been a lot of bright spots for either of these Cape Coral teams this season. Seahawks RB Isaac Washington’s 300-plus yard game gave the team hope heading into a non-district game with Lehigh last week before being stonewalled by the Lightning defense. With little to no production from the quarterback position, the offense has become one-dimensional. However, a meeting with a team that’s given up 40 points per game may be just what the doctor ordered. Island Coast: The Gators’ struggles haven’t just been on the defensive side of the ball. They were held to negative yardage and just two first downs in a 41-0 loss to Dunbar last week. While the microscope has been on senior QB Kory Curtis, who has completed just 40 percent of his passes this season, he has little time to throw the ball and is constantly forced out of the pocket. This, however, may be the game he erupts for significant passing yardage. Expect a shootout in the Cape.

The News-Press’ pick: Island Coast 46, Cape Coral 40

Port Charlotte (5-0, 2-0) at Ida Baker (2-5, 0-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Port Charlotte: This is a District 6A-10 game. The Pirates had their non-district game with Sebring last week cancelled as a result of Hurricane Matthew. Port Charlotte has allowed just 48 points this season and should be tested by Ida Baker’s pass-heavy offense. Baker: The Bulldogs must win their last three games to avoid their third straight losing season. The offense has 57 points the last two weeks in losses thanks to the 96 points surrendered by the defense. There won’t be much Baker can do to slow down a Port Charlotte offense that has scored no less than 28 points in all five of its games this season. That puts a lot of pressure on Baker QB Toby Noland (1,574 passing yards, 13 TDs) and the offense to answer every Port Charlotte score. Senior receiver Luke Endsley leads Lee County in receiving with 55 catches for 905 yards and eight touchdowns.

The News-Press’ pick: Port Charlotte 44, Ida Baker 30

South Fort Myers runs all over Ida Baker

Bishop Verot (3-4, 2-1) at Mulberry (2-4, 2-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

What to watch for — Verot: This is a District 4A-6 game. The Vikings control their own destiny in the race for the runner-up spot in the district. They were dealt a discouraging 39-21 loss by East Lee County in a game where they again had trouble establishing the run and were held to negative yardage on the ground. Sophomore Fletcher Reynolds leads the Verot defense in tackles with 70. He’ll be a key element in trying to stop Mulberry’s Wing-T rushing attack installed by first-year coach Kenneth Grantham. Mulberry: The Panthers surrendered 41 points per game in their four losses, but have gotten back on track recently with a 46-20 district win over Lake Placid on Monday. Junior RB Elijah Cooper has three 100-yard rushing performances this season.

The News-Press’ pick: Bishop Verot 36, Mulberry 21

Marco Island Academy (0-5, 0-3) at Southwest Florida Christian Academy (2-4, 0-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

What to watch for — MIA: This is a District 2A-7 game. The Manta Rays are coming off a bye week after giving up 163 points in their five losses. SFCA: The King’s are looking to snap a four-game losing streak, which included a 41-27 loss to Moore Haven. SFCA will look for Dillon Martino, who has 47 tackles on the season, to carry the defense on a short week.

The News-Press’ pick: SFCA 21, Marco Island 14

Riverview Bell Creek (2-4) at Canterbury (4-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m

What to watch for — Bell Creek: The Panthers are in their first year of 11-man football and so far have one win on the scoreboard and one win via forfeit on the season. Last week, they were defeated 44-6 by Northside Christian. Zach Swan scored on a 47-yard run and is one of Bell Creek’s primary ball carriers. Quarterback Damon Mercilliott has scored four touchdowns on the ground to go along with one touchdown pass. Canterbury: The Cougars have experienced a breakthrough season under first-year head coach Derrick Crudup and are riding a four-game winning streak. Last week they took down Winter Haven All Saints Academy 29-13. Danny Cunningham has been a standout performer and he threw two touchdowns and picked off a pass on defense. Expect Canterbury to continue their fine form as they have averaged a shade over 30 points per game during their winning streak..

The News-Press’ pick: Canterbury 39, Bell Creek 9

Lakeland Teneroc (2-4, 2-1) at Gateway Charter (1-5, 0-3)

Time: 7:30 p.m

What to watch for — Tenoroc: This is a District 4A-6 matchup. The Titans are in a three-way tie for second in the district behind Avon Park. They have averaged 32 points the last two games in two district victories, including defeating LaBelle 30-19 Monday. J’Toriance Spate leads Teneroc with four rushing touchdowns and averages almost 90 yards a game on the ground. Luis Martinez is the favorite target for Josh Allard, averaging 100 receiving yards a game and has six touchdown catches. Gateway: The Griffins saw Avon Park showcase their talent, losing 54-6 on Monday. Jerramie Joseph’s 60-yard kickoff return were the only points Gateway Charter mustered. The Griffins will have to get Chris Ceasar going early and often if they can keep pace with the Titans.

The News-Press’ pick: Teneroc 43, Gateway Charter 15

Lake Placid (2-4, 1-3) at LaBelle (2-5, 1-3)

Time: 7:30 p.m

What to watch for — Lake Placid: This is a District 4A-6 matchup. The Dragons have struggled in district play outside of a 40-0 victory over Gateway Charter. They’ve allowed almost 40 points per game in their three losses, and last week lost 46-20 against Mulberry. Lake Placid features a run-heavy offense led by Katwan Ward, who averages nearly 100 yards a game on the ground. Markie McCray has four rushing touchdowns on only 22 carries for the season. LaBelle: The Cowboys road woes continued on Monday with a 30-19 defeat at the hands of Lakeland Teneroc as LaBelle hasn’t won away from home this season. At home, they’ve been competitive with narrow defeats to Mariner and Bishop Verot. Tray Williams has scored nine total touchdowns and found the end zone twice on Monday in a near 100-yard effort on the ground. A close game should favor LaBelle as kicker Johnathan Morales is 7-for-9 on the season and hit from 46 yards on Monday.

The News-Press’ pick: LaBelle 27, Lake Placid 20

Evangelical Christian (0-6, 0-3) at Community School of Naples (5-2, 2-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

What to watch for — This is a District 2A-7 matchup. ECS: The Sentinels are seeking their first victory of the season and have struggled putting points on the board the past three weeks. Averaging a shade over six points per game, Evangelical Christian’s season high is only 19 which happened in their second game of the season. Correy Massey had a breakout game last week against St. John Neumann, scoring the only touchdown for the Sentinels 3 minutes in during a 25-7 defeat. Massey ran for 94 yards on 29 carries and should see a similar workload this week. CSN: The Seahawks were roughed up by First Baptist 54-7 last week, allowing 40 points combined in the second and third quarters. Allowing over 400 rushing yards to the Lions, the defense was simply worn down and outmatched as the game wore on. In the loss, quarterback Cooper Weiss suffered a shoulder injury and likely will miss multiple weeks. That will mean Joe Lang should see more touches at running back, where he has scored eight touchdowns on the season.

The News-Press’ pick: CSN 36, ECS 13

The Lee County Fab 5

South Fort Myers remains No. 1 in the Fab 5. The Wolfpack face Riverdale in their District 7A-12 opener Friday.

South Fort Myers remains No. 1 in the Fab 5. The Wolfpack face Riverdale in their District 7A-12 opener Friday.

1. South Fort Myers (6-0): The Wolfpack’s drive to its fifth straight district title begins against Riverdale this week.

2. Fort Myers (3-3): The Green Wave should walk all over an outmatched Estero team.

3. Dunbar (4-2): The Tigers can’t afford to stub their toe over the next three weeks.

4. North Fort Myers (3-2): It’s do or die against undefeated Charlotte this week.

5. Lehigh (3-3): Wins over East Lee County this week and Estero in two weeks, the Lightning will clinch a postseason berth.

Bishop Verot spikes Community School in District 5A-10 final - Bishop Verot wins District 5A-10 volleyball title

When Community School of Naples threatened Thursday night in their District 5A-10 volleyball championship, Bishop Verot and Mindie Mabry kept them at an arm’s length.

Literally.

With Mabry playing a nearly perfect match, The Vikings swept the Seahawks 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 for the title at LaBelle High.

Bishop Verot (23-4) will next host Academy of Holy Names while Community School (17-6) will travel to Berkeley Prep.

“She had 25 kills and zero hitting errors,” Bishop Verot coach Jeremy Ridgeo said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything like that stat-wise. She was not pressing, not trying to score two points on a play.

Mabry, who’ll attend Harvard, had many of her kills when CSN was close.

The Vikings led the Seahawks just 18-16 and 20-18 in the first two sets while trailing 4-1 in the third.

“When times are tough I say, ‘Hey give me the ball, let’s get back in a groove,’” she said.

CSN coach Alicia MacIntyre said Mabry is so athletic she can jump above everyone.

“You have to know when you have a player like that, you just have to watch it off and move on,” she said. “I was happy with our defense, our serve receive. We never let down.

“I think we fought really tough and came out with a fire. We’ve played them closer each time.”

While the Seahawks played without captain Gabrielle Moriconi (ankle), Bishop Verot played without Florida State recruit Alyssa Collins (ankle) as well as Melissa Becker, who was on a retreat. However, Jessica Gedra (ankle) saw some action as she recovers from an injury.

Teya Leonard had 16 assists and Ally Gerlach 13 assists for Bishop Verot. Emily Hanus had 32 assists for CSN while Sofia and Cecilia Nakfoor combined for 40 digs. Camberly Moriconi had 13 kills.

Fort Myers sweeps District 3A-11 cross country titles

Fort Myers High School's Kristlin Gear, right, competes in the Hoptar Invitational at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres on Saturday. Gear won the race.

Fort Myers High School’s Kristlin Gear, right, competes in the Hoptar Invitational at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres on Saturday. Gear won the race.

Breakthroughs come in various forms in cross country, but success isn’t always measured in record times.

Fort Myers seniors Krissy Gear and Evan Babatz credited positive-thinking and perseverance as launching points in Friday’s District 3A-11 championships at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres.

Gear claimed her third straight district title in 18:43.06, helping the Green Wave girls secure a near flawless win, their third straight district title.

Babatz, meanwhile, flew to the finish line for his first career varsity win in a time of 16:57, leading the boys to their third straight district championship.

“I’ve won a ton of track events, but first win in the 5K feels good,” Babatz said.

The Fort Myers girls had their top five runners in the top seven places and 10 in the top 18. The Green Wave boys had their five scorers in the top 10 and eight in the first 16.

If nothing else, girls coach Rob Strong and boys coach Yancey Palmer will have some difficult decisions moving forward in deciding their postseason lineups.

“That was as happy as I’ve been for them as a team all year,” said Strong, whose team had to endure a 40-minute delay to start the race after a bus carrying the North Fort Myers team blew a tire. “There are girls fighting for spots who know we’re not going to win a region, we’re not going to win a state title, unless we race the way we should race.”

Outside of the Green Wave girls, Charlotte, Cape Coral and Riverdale secured automatic qualification to the Region 3A-3 championship at Estero Community Park on Oct. 28.

On the boys’ side, Cape Coral, Port Charlotte, Ida Baker and Charlotte punched their tickets to next week’s region meet.

“The boys came out and had a really effective race, all things considered,” said Palmer, whose team hadn’t raced since the LCAC championships 17 days prior.

Gear was followed closely all race by North Fort Myers senior Kayla Easterly, who was second in 18:49.50. The pair see-sawed for much of the first half, before Gear surged for a 10-meter cushion and closed hard.

“It was nice to go out hard in this course and beat my time from LCAC,” said Easterly, who beat Gear in that race on Oct. 4 with a time of 19:14.90 on the same course. “It’s still progress.”

Riverdale junior Chelsey Oliver came in third in 19:47.91.

Cypress Lake’s girls had three runners inside the top 16, including junior Sage Williamson, who finished ninth in a season-best 20:58.23, but the Panthers missed one of the top four automatic placements into the region meet. The top 15 runners qualified for the region.

“I’ve been dealing with shin splints most of the season,” Williamson said, “but I’m really happy with today.”

The Fort Myers girls buried the field up front. Junior Fiona Kurland was fourth (20:08.74), sophomore Kailyn Kaminski landed in fifth (20:31.37), senior Sidney Oakes-Lottridge was sixth (20:46.82) and senior Shelby Guttery closed out the team’s scoring in seventh (20:55.38).

“The girls stepped up when they needed to,” Strong said. “Shelby and Sidney were huge today, they pushed through, and everyone reacted to them and raced behind. They know what it takes to race at the state meet.”

In the boys race, Ida Baker sophomore Ryan Ringer was third overall in 17:20.17. Mariner senior Darickson Gonzalez was fourth in 17:31.50 and the Cape Coral duo of Bryan Markovich and Brice Kelly were eighth and ninth.

Babatz and second-place runner Josh Kennedy were followed by sophomore Nick Carpenter in fifth (17:37.41), senior Matt Celebrado in seventh (17:41.56) and senior Luis Padilla in 10th (17:53.16).

Babatz dealt with an early season injury that made him miss two meets. He has since regained the form that makes him one of the toughest runners in Southwest Florida.

“I think the last race, it was LCAC three weeks ago,” he said. “Since then I’ve strengthened a lot and got my confidence back. And also my physical ability, too.”

North Fort Myers never let this game get away.

Which was the exact response the Red Knights needed to put to bed the last three weeks of football.

While the Red Knights 41-15 win over Ida Baker on Friday at Moody Field couldn’t miraculously push them back into the playoff race in District 6A-10, it did provide a decisive boost heading into the last two weeks of the season.

Previous losses to Charlotte and Port Charlotte aside, this North Fort Myers team looked nothing like the second half squad that limped to the finish in those games.

The Red Knights (4-3, 2-2) scored the game’s first two touchdowns on 1-play drives and then bullied Ida Baker with 27 second half points. The Bulldogs (2-7, 0-4) yielded 237 yards on the ground and gave up four rushing touchdowns.

“We made the plays we needed to make,” North coach Earnest Graham said. “In the first half we really wanted to come out and pound the ball because we knew we were going to get a couple different kids the ball.”

Junior Fa’Najae Gotay scored on a 52-yard carry on his second touch from scrimmage in the first quarter and then broke through for another just two series later for 84 yards. He finished with 137 yards on 10 carries and also helmed a defense that bent but didn’t break very often.

“Our purpose was that we wanted to play a complete game,” Graham said. “I think we did that. We were efficient and just made good plays all around.”

North didn’t beat itself as it did in losses to Port Charlotte and Charlotte, turning the ball over three times but preventing the Bulldogs from capitalizing.

Senior Zaquandre White was nursing an injury for most of the game and carried five times for 37 yards and two scores in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Ben Pogue was 6 of 9 for 176 yards and two touchdowns in the air.

The Red Knights strung together 479 yards of total offense.

North’s defense also forced Ida Baker into six turnovers and three takeaways, including two interceptions. In the third quarter, junior Joe Wilkins raced back 53 yards to the Bulldog’s 12 before the Red Knights scored one play later.  Herb Riggins added the team’s other interception.

“We knew they were a passing offense, so we just played the pass for the most part and stuff the run,” said Gotay, who soaked up the middle of the field at linebacker. “This was a great win.”

Ida Baker had moments of success, including 12 third quarter points. Running back Shomari Mason scooted into the end zone from 7 yards out with 6:49 left in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 12 points, and finished with 22 carries for 79 yards.

But Ida Baker also made its fair share of mistakes. They turned the ball over on downs three times, and had three vital scoring opportunities inside North’s 20 go south in the first half. Bulldogs junior quarterback Toby Noland was 27 of 42 for 195 yards, but he was intercepted twice.

Kicker Nick Jacob nailed a 25-yard field goal to open up Ida Baker’s scoring in the second quarter.
